Maelys J. Amat, MD, MBA is Associate Medical Director at MassHealth (Massachusetts Medicaid), Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and a primary care physician in the Division of General Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).
Dr. Amat completed her internal medicine residency and chief medical residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where her scholarship addressed healthcare disparities in vulnerable patient populations. Her research focused on improving the healthcare experience for patients with limited English proficiency, uncovering healthcare disparities between resident and faculty patients stemming from social determinants of health, and developing an explanatory model for patient loss in primary care. As chief resident, she was offered the Arnold Tofias/Leo Condakes Quality Scholarship and joined a team investigating diagnostic errors in primary care caused by failures to follow up on diagnostic tests, referrals, and symptoms through an AHRQ R18 grant. As a faculty member, she was appointed Director of Social Justice in the Office of Graduate Medical Education and developed health equity and advocacy curricula for residents and fellows at BIDMC. She also served as the Medical Director for Text Messaging Initiatives in the Office of Population Health, where she led the implementation of two-way text messaging to decrease disparities in hypertension and diabetes outcomes for underserved patients. In 2024, she accepted a full-time position as Associate Medical Director at MassHealth in the Office of Long-Term Services & Supports, where she oversees quality and utilization for health plans who care for dual eligible (Medicare-Medicaid) members, with the goal of ensuring these members receive the highest quality of care.
