Please note that we are no longer accepting applications for these scholarly opportunities
The HMS Center for Primary Care – Global Primary Health Care and the Southeast Asia Initiative at the Harvard University Asia Center are pleased to announce research and scholarly opportunities in Southeast Asia for Harvard students through placements among a consortium of organizations including the Partnership for Health Advancement in Viet Nam (HAIVN), a collaboration between Harvard Medical School (HMS), the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the University of Philippines Manila and the Praboromarajchanok Institute of Thailand. We are offering Harvard students in degree-granting programs the opportunity to apply for the 2024/5 Scholars Program. This program centers on a 12-month research project that will contribute to Harvard’s work to advance people-centered care approaches within health system reform through knowledge generation, innovation, and advocacy.
All Scholars will be supervised by Harvard faculty and local academics and will receive monthly teaching and regular support to assist them in completing their project. Each project includes a 4-6 week placement over the northern hemisphere summer, where students may be embedded with the local project teams in the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand. A limited number of travel scholarships are available on an as needed basis.
Ideal candidates will have a strong passion for challenges facing healthcare quality and access to care in low- or middle-income countries, primary health care, interest in medical education and/or quality improvement. Previous experience working in a low-or-middle-income country setting is preferred. Fluency in Vietnamese, Filipino or Thai is highly desirable, but not essential for the role.
Below is a summary of the projects that are available for the 2024/2025 academic year. Others may be available, by special request and initiative of the candidate, but cannot be guaranteed.
For each project, the expected deliverables will include the following (this will be in addition to any core school/degree/training requirements e.g., if undertaken as an elective or practicum):
Brief report with relevant literature review and proposed methods
- Brief report with relevant literature review and proposed methods

- Powerpoint presentation with on process, findings/outputs, and recommended next steps
- One manuscript draft which may be used for publication
- Personal reflection on lessons learned through the experience and cross-country collaboration
Interested candidates submitted a resume/CV and Letter of Interest prior to Friday 15 of November. The Letters of Interest indicated:
- Why the candidate is interested in this opportunity, indicating the specific project of interest (as described above). Please indicate the Project Number (e.g. “Subj: Project X Interest”) in the subject line;
- Relevant experience working in LMICs and/or the fields of interest;
- How the opportunity will serve the candidates intended professional development;
- If the candidate has any committed or possible funding sources which may be applied to this opportunity (i.e. travel funding, living stipend, etc.).
